Swarm Season in James Bay
By Lisa Tyler
On June 2nd our neighbours were all a-buzz as Chris Adams and Barry Denluck retrieved a swarm of bees. Chris's hive had swarmed as a new Queen reigned and the old Queen left the hive. I was on my deck when our neighbors pointed out the two swarms of bees in their trees and said that they had phoned Barry, from the Capital Region Beekeepers Association to come and get the bees. Chris Adams was also informed of the swarm and he and Barry arrived at the same time and determined that the swarm was from Chris's hive. Chris explained that swarming is the means by which honeybees create new colonies. He and Barry collectively gathered the bees and Chris was able to create a new hive with his swarm. As more people are keeping bees again in James Bay, swarms are becoming common, as it used to be years ago, especially in early summer, which is "swarm season."
