New break-water hand railings

by Bob Tuomi

The much discussed hand railings are installed and they look great! The locally designed streamlined post-and-cable design of the hand-railings, fabricated in the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority shops, address all the issues raised by the public. No, they don't block the view. You can safely go right to the edge to look at the spectacular views or even to look down at the surf crashing at your feet. No, they won't eliminate vertigo, entirely. But, yes: you feel safer; you will be safer; and workers maintaining the breakwater will be complying with the Canada Labour Code.

The Ogden Point breakwater is a spectacular walkway and the number of walkers has greatly increased over the years. Unfortunately, young families, the elderly and the mobility impaired were excluded from this unique Victoria experience. Now, wheelchairs, mobility scooters, prams and strollers are welcome. Not so, roller blades, skateboards, bikes and pets. Well done G.V.H.A.

One of Victoria's newest electric vehicle charging station was installed at Ogden Point in James Bay this spring. This brings the total in the city to 11 and counting! For other charging station locations see the city website.

Henrietta, photographed coming ashore at the Dallas Road boat launch, is one of three specially designed amphibious vehicles roaming our neighbourhood this tourist season. Each vehicle will carry up to 40 passengers and is skippered by a licensed Transport Canada fully certified motor-coach operator. The other hippos are called Happy and Harry.
