James Bay New Horizons

By Kim Dixon

Hard to believe that autumn has already arrived. Leaves are starting to fall and the nights are much cooler. Enough of the lazy days of summer; time to get busy again.

We will soon be starting the Fall programs. We had a great turnout at the Open House held September 11. It was an opportunity for people to sign up for programs and activities. If you missed it, why not drop by now and see what is happening at the activity centre? James Bay New Horizons is a great place to meet people, socialize and get involved. You've walked by hundreds of times. Next time, take the challenge and stop in, have a tour and see what goes on behind those closed doors!

We were sad to hear about the two gentlemen found in their homes after having medical emergencies a few weeks ago. Since 2005 we have offered the Seniors Reassurance program for people living in the greater Victoria area. We were asked by the Victoria Police Department to take over this program on their behalf and we were pleased to do so as a support, not only to our members but anyone else living alone. This program is not meant to be invasive. Volunteers just give a quick call in the morning to ensure that the client is having a good day. If you are going out early, a 24 hour message service is available so you can call in and let us know you are okay. In case of an emergency help can be sent. If you would like more information about this program, please do not hesitate to call us at 250-386-3035 and we will be happy to talk to you.

James Bay New Horizons will soon be offering a Senior Information Network program where you can make an appointment to discuss senior issues such as housing, homecare, healthcare and anything else you may be concerned about with a professional from the public health sector. We are also launching a new web site where you can look up information and share with other family members who may not live in the Victoria area. We are excited about this program and pleased that the information will be universal for the Greater Victoria area.

Scooters have been in the news lately. We will be offering scooter safety workshops in the Victoria region over the next few months. We are pleased to be working with HandiDart, City of Victoria Transportation, Medi Chair, City of Victoria council, and others to ensure that all aspects of information and safety are covered. Our first workshop is tentatively set for Oct. 9th. Be sure to call and register. Refreshments will be served.

In closing, I would like to mention that October 1st is International Day of the Older Person, and we will be celebrating on Wednesday, Oct. 2 with a Day of the Older Person Tea and entertainment with our Saints & Singers choir performing music from the movies. Hope everyone has the opportunity to celebrate this special day in their own way.

Happy Thanksgiving!
