27 Government Street circa 1940

The old photo was taken of the Jubb family house at 27 Government Street, my childhood home. The photographer is unknown, and it was probably taken around 1940 - 1950. I believe that one of those housewives on the front porch is my mother, Dolly. There were a lot of good times in that wooden house by the ocean. In the seventies, there was tremendous pressure from developers to persuade homeowners to sell; the old homes were torn down and apartment buildings built. My parents - and their neighbours - sold their houses and the present Tigh-Na-Mara condominium was built. It still makes me very sad to walk by the place where I spent my childhood and see the old house gone.
A piece of history is gone forever. When houses are torn down, so are the legacies of all the people who lived there who helped forge a strong vibrant community. And you can never get that back."
