James Bay Market Society
By Candis Elliott
“Why don’t we create a neighbourhood market that would have fresh produce and food as well as crafts available to the people of James Bay?” This simple question, posed by Denis Bodson who served the community as a Board Director of the James Bay Community Project is what inspired this successful neighbourhood venture that continues today.
Denis often stopped by my office at the “Project” where I worked as a Community Development Worker, but on this day in 1994, there was some determination behind this question, asked in such a way that it planted the seed for this initiative to blossom and thrive. I made some initial contacts and researched the steps necessary to get the “ball rolling”.
Thus began a lengthy process of organizing interested residents to write a Constitution and Bylaws as founding Directors of the James Bay Market Society. With support, they developed a vision and designed the details preparing to negotiate the processes at the neighbourhood level and the City of Victoria. This was very much a period of growth for Denis, and it was delightful to watch him rise to the occasion as he prepared for public speaking at various presentations including City Hall. There were some rough spots, but the Market finally settled for its beginnings operating at South Park School.
Its success today is due to the vision of people like Denis Bodson, but it would not have sustained if not for the energy and tenacity of Pat McGuire, who with her family, saw it through the formative years, faithfully posting the signs around the neighbourhood through months of Friday nights to get out the crowds on Saturday mornings, volunteering every Saturday, serving on the board. These individuals stand out in their efforts, along with many dedicated community members who have kept it humming over the years, ensuring it honours the spirit of its roots. We are very grateful to all!
