Best Kept Secret…and Now You Know
Oct 2010
How many times do you walk by and wonder what happens behind those front doors? Next time, drop in and have a peek. We are happy to show you around the Centre and explain the programs and activities that make us the busiest centre in Victoria!
There is a misconception that we only have programs for seniors. In fact, several years ago, it was decided that we would open our programs and activities up to people of all ages.
Some say there are too many choices. Certainly, there are enough to keep anyone busy every day of the week. From walking on Monday, exercises on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Discussion Group on Wednesday, Friday Forum with Guest Speakers from various groups and organizations, as well as the UVic Speakers bureau, there is plenty to do. Popular card games, a handicraft group, a choir, (sing-a-long) a jazz band, hand bells and a book club, photo classes and computer workshops are just a few of the activities offered. As well, there are services such as: a book and movie (VHS & DVD) library, three computer stations with internet access, blood pressure clinics, chair massage, scooter safety clinics are all available for our members. Hot lunch is served on Tuesdays at noon in partnership with Beckley Farm Lodge and on Thursday we serve Chili, (through a kind donation from Grilligan's at Fisherman's Wharf) and bun, dessert and coffee/tea for a nominal fee of $3.00. After lunch we invite you to stay and watch a movie.
The yearly membership fee helps offset the operational costs of the Society. Our building is owned by the City of Victoria and we appreciate the generous support they give us. They also give us an administrative grant once a year, the purpose being to help with staff wages. All other operational costs are managed by the Society and although we hold several fundraising events throughout the year, the membership fee is the greatest support that we get.
We are grateful for the support that our Executive Director is able to give our members. With her background in homecare, she is able to guide people through the "system". She is always willing to take the time to listen and give guidance or referrals when necessary.
Many of you have been to the Centre for a meeting of one of the many rental groups that meet at the Centre. Why don't you take the opportunity to drop in and see how you can be involved? New members are always welcome.
In partnership with VIHA, James Bay New Horizons will be hosting a Flu Clinic on Wednesday, October 27th. This clinic is open to the public and will be held from 9:15 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. There is no charge, just drop in; appointments are not necessary.
Other fun events for November include our Annual Christmas Bazaar, Puttin' on the Glitz Fashion Show & Sale, our Seniors on Stage group will be performing "The Shelter Show - Memories of Time in an Air Raid Shelter" in recognition of Remembrance Day. These events have a cover charge as refreshments will be served. We hope you will take this opportunity to stop in, get a ticket and see what fun you are missing.
The 2011 memberships will be on sale starting Dec 1. We look forward to your support and appreciate your consideration.
