James Bay Community Centre School
By Darcy Topinka
What is the outcome of 300 hours of community service? What might the end result look like? The final product or result can take many shapes and yield some pretty impressive results. To Ritba Kostiau, 300 hours of volunteer time means 300 warm fuzzy toques. Ritba knitted enough warm wooly hats for all of our students here at the Community School. On behalf of all the students and appreciative parents, thank you Ritba for your generosity and thoughtfulness.
As part of the school's annual Remembrance Day assembly on November 10 at 11:00 am, the school will host a guest speaker from Esquimalt, and children will perform and acknowledge the men and women in the Canadian armed forces. Interested community members are welcome to attend the ceremony.
The James Bay Community School Society will host its annual AGM on November 22 at 6:30 pm here at the school. Interested community members are welcome to join us to hear about all the fantastic achievements our organization made in 2009. The community school would like to also acknowledge outgoing board members Treasurer Maevea Gillespie, Grant Kerr, and Fiona Cubbitt. We greatly appreciate your time and effort.
Joy Nugent and her volunteers from Royal Roads University ran a very successful World Café in October. Many thanks to those of you who participated and made the event a huge success. We are most appreciative of all your comments and ideas. The JBCSS Board of Directors will review the community's feedback and generate our strategic plan, which will guide our organization over the next five years.
The Community Centre has just recently added a child- appropriate washroom to one of its childcare spaces. The addition of the facility will make trips to the washroom that much easier for staff and pre-school children. If your child is at least three years old and toilet trained, he or she is welcome to join us in our newest child care program called Little Waves opening November 1. We are located one block from the ocean and with great access to public parks; our group day care promises a safe and inexpensive quality program dedicated to the emotional, physical and intellectual development of your child. Registration information can be obtained from the front desk or by contacting Jeff Stubbs at the centre.
In an effort to provide the residents of James Bay with increased access to community programs, recreation, and leisure experiences, the community centre will be open from 9 am to 12 noon on Saturdays. Join us for kinder gym, ideal for parents and preschool aged children; add a fitness class to your morning routine, and if child minding is an issue, we have that covered. You will also find various life long learning workshops planned throughout the school year.
Those seniors living in James Bay might want to drop down for our weekly 55+ dinners regularly scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A menu of advance meal plans can be obtained from the front desk. This valued James Bay tradition offers an excellent meal at an affordable cost and will connect you with others in your community.
