The Christmas break is usually a time for those embroiled in education to take a break and recharge. Not so at James Bay United Church.

School is on the minds of many at the historic clapboard church on Michigan Street. By anyone's recollection, it's been at least a decade since Sunday school was offered at JBUC. That's something the little church, opened in 1892, is determined to change.

"As far as Christian churches go, we're the only game in town, or at least the only one in James Bay," says Rev. Ken Crassweller, JBUC's interim minister. The church's leaders and board of directors were all keen on resurrecting a Sunday School, voting unanimously to get one operating as soon as possible. The goal is January.

My own two school-age boys have enjoyed attending services with me for the last two years. A classmate of my younger son has also attended church without the benefit of Sunday School. But that's been about the extent of youngsters crossing the JBUC threshold in the last few years. Crassweller senses a spiritual need in James Bay that isn't being fulfilled.

"We really want to open up and offer something to the community, for the children of the community and their families," Crassweller says.

The first step is recruiting Sunday school teachers. If you have any interest in teaching Sunday school, please contact: Rev. Ken Crassweller at 250-384-5821 or leskenc@shaw.ca, or Grant Kerr: 250-382-3875, or kateandgrant@hotmail.com
