James Bay New Horizons

By Kim Dixon

As you are probably aware, the James Bay New Horizons building is owned by the City of Victoria. The doors opened in September 1974 with the main hall, front entrance and kitchen. Over the years there have been several additions to the building and when the library was added in early 1980, the front garden was planted. Well, as all gardeners know, there comes a time when plants just get tired. The cedar shrubs were starting to deteriorate and the cherry tree was not viable as the base tree was rotting. In consultation with the board of directors and staff, city officials thought it best to clean up the garden and the scooter parking area.

For safety reasons, glass panels were put up, so those people entering and exiting the Centre might have a clear vision of the scooter parking area. This will also give people waiting for Handi Dart and taxis the ability to watch from a sheltered area for their transportation to arrive.

There have been several suggestions on how this area can be used, such as providing a place for people to sit and have a cup of coffee on mild, sunny days. During the summer, the handicrafts sales can be held in this area, attracting passers-by.

There are plans to replant the garden and have a nice canopy installed over the front door. Fundraising events are in the works to offset the cost.

We were delighted with the turnout at our Spring/Summer Open House held on Saturday, April 9th. Instructors were on hand to demonstrate their classes with free mini lessons, and the program guides were available for pick up. We are delighted to be able to offer several new programs including 15-minute Shiatsu appointments on Tuesdays; various computer-related workshops on Saturdays; Hatha Yoga and Wellness T'ai Chi; food and nutrition workshops; a men's group that meets for coffee and discussion on Mondays at 1:30 p.m.

As well, regular programs such as ASEL (exercise program), Zumba Gold dance aerobics, Stretch and Strength aerobics, the "Out to Lunch Bunch" and others will be continuing. Feel free to drop by and pick up a program guide and sign up for classes and activities.
