A Reluctant Farewell to Bonnie Dale
Apr 2011
James Bay Community School
By Darcy Topinka
At the end of May, Bonnie Dale our dedicated accounts manager will retire; after 28 years of service to the James Bay Community School Society, Bonnie has decided to unplug her calculator. Those of us who know her well can be assured the adding machine will not find itself in a land fill. Not only have I had the good fortune of working with such a wonderful lady, I have had the good fortune of inheriting a clump of used staples the size of a baseball. Bonnie takes the issue of recycling most seriously.
Bonnie has proven to be a trusted friend of the Community School and has advised and directed many staff over the years. Her sound judgment and calm and level minded demeanor have guided and assisted society decision makers throughout the past three decades. Through her involvement with both the school and centre and her keen interest in her community, Bonnie has contributed countless volunteer hours, and has maintained and nurtured many friendships here at the Community School. All of us here wish Bonnie the very best in her retirement, although we are reluctant to see her go.
We hope to see James Bay families and friends of the Community School show up in droves to support the artistic achievements of our amazing kids, as they showcase their art work as part of our artist in the school series. On Thursday, May 5, at 6:30 pm the school and centre will host an evening of art appreciation with a show and a sale of children's art. Proceeds from the sale of the artistic creations are donated to a local children's charity here in Victoria. I welcome community members to take part in the creation of a piece of art led by local James Bay artist Peter Alan. Live music and refreshments are all a part of this wonderful evening, all made possible by the generous support of South Harbour Partners.
The Community School wishes to acknowledge the passing of James Bay resident Fred Coyle. His valuable contribution over the past decade has influenced our ability to do a considerable amount of additional programming for children. Fred led his South Harbour team of James Bay Community School supporters with a dignified level of enthusiasm and candor. He was instrumental in making sure the annual campaign was well organized and well executed year after year. Our condolences go out to Fred's family, and our heartfelt gratitude for all he did for the community school.
In mid-April we welcomed an Art Starts performance by Marimba Muzuva; toes were tapping and hands were clapping as we listened to wonderful stories woven together with Shona music and dance. The performance was dedicated in memory of our former Community School Coordinator, Jesse Hyder. Mr. Hyder was a friend and a huge fan of the group.
Make a note on your calendar: Wednesday June 15 is our annual community picnic. Donations are pouring in for our annual silent auction. The silent auction is part of a fun-filled afternoon which marks the end of the school term, bringing families and community members together.
To all of you moms out there: Happy Mothers Day. Be sure to put your feet up for an hour or two, or at the very least ask for a foot rub; better yet, refuse to make dinner; doing the dishes is out of the question. Might I boldly suggest you go on strike even if it is for just one day; if walking off the job is not an option, try a work slow-down. Take a couple of deep breaths; give yourself a pat on the back, because this is your day. Try to forget that the chaos and mayhem starts all over again tomorrow.
