James Bay Market Opens
Apr 2011
Established in 1985, the James Bay Community Market is still going strong. It's mission; to promote community through local commerce and entertainment still rings true today with over 40 local vendors involved in the market each week.
This year is one of change for the market, with long-time dedicated board members stepping down, allowing for new members to step up to the plate and bring with them new and exciting ideas. As a volunteer based board, the James Bay Market Society is always looking for new members and wants to extend a heartfelt thank you to the many wonderful volunteers and members that currently support the society and the market.
"As a past vendor, I believe I can offer a unique perspective into the needs of the market and the individual vendors," says Dallas Campbell, this year's market coordinator. "My hope is to build solid vendor participation through increased special events, establishing strong working relationships with local businesses and through community spirit," Dallas goes on to say.
Other changes include a much needed upgrade of their website; jamesbaymarket.com. Some new features include improved vendor profiles, calendar of events, and the ability to download the market's new bi-weekly newsletter, RAIN OR SHINE. Special thanks go out to Clarke Wright and Tanya Burger for their time and expertise spent on this endeavour.
The James Bay Community Market is excited for this season's line up of special events beginning with Opening Day/Mother's Day Celebrations on May 7th with special guests Wontanara Drum and Dance and a special gift for Mothers (while supplies last). May 14th is the first of three in our "Home Grown" lecture series; "Get Growing". Come for free lectures, tips and advice on gardening and related topics.
Plans are in the works for a "Bike-to-the-Market" event on June 4th with a kid's bike rodeo, information booth hosted by the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition and other great displays.
Also planned for July and Aug are the 2nd and 3rd instalments of the "Home Grown" lecture series and for late Sept the "James Bay Market Fall Festival" with something for everyone to enjoy.
If you're interested in meeting people, promoting local commerce and getting into the James Bay Spirit come join us at the corner of Menzies Street and Superior Street every Saturday, 9am-3pm, from May 7th through Oct 8th.
