James Bay New Horizons

By Kim Dixon

Looks like autumn has arrived as the days are getting shorter and the evenings cooler -- particularly in James Bay when that breeze starts to blow in the late afternoon.

Just like children returning back to school, our members will be starting the fall sessions of programs and activities this month, and some have already begun. Our program coordinator has worked hard over the summer speaking to various instructors to offer a wide range of programs for the mature adult.

We are also pleased to be able to offer a variety of services for our members. For example, have you ever had a detox foot spa? How about a chair massage or a reflexology treatment? Are you concerned about your blood pressure? For the latter we invite you to drop by our clinic held the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.

During the summer we have been able to partner with Subway and Ogden Point Café where you will receive a ten-percent discount when you show your membership card. Drop by and see what other discounts are available to our members.

Sincere appreciation is extended to our friends at Shaw Cable who recently came and interviewed the volunteers and clients of the Seniors Reassurance Program. The result was a wonderful three-minute documentary that aired on community TV. This resulted in several new clients to the program. If you are interested in learning how this free program may benefit you, please do not hesitate to drop in and speak to the staff.

Our major fundraiser of the year will be held on Friday, September 30. This is the date of our live auction. We are looking forward to an exciting evening, and a variety of items totalling $7,000 in retail value will be up for bid. Be sure to get your ticket as you will not want to miss out on some great bargains. Doors open at 6 p.m., with refreshments included in the ticket price of $10. The auction will start sharply at 7 p.m.

Our in-house troupe, Seniors on Stage, has been rehearsing since August for their "Musical Antiques Show" on  Oct. 5th with a variety of entertainment, including songs and skits. Ticket are $5 and include refreshments.

Tickets for "Reflections of Red" will go on sale the middle of October. This is a good, family-oriented show that is a tribute to one of America's funniest clowns, Red Skelton. There will be limited seating for this Nov. 4th event, so please book early!

Remember, our door is always open and we look forward to seeing you walk in.
