James Bay New Horizons

By Kim Dixon

As the Christmas season approaches we would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members, volunteers, instructors, and members of the community that have generously supported our Centre this past year.

We would also like to thank the following businesses, owners/operators and staff for their generosity and big hearts during the past year:

James Bay Pharmasave,  James Bay Serious Coffee, Bank of Montreal, James Bay Thrifty Foods, James Bay Subway,  James Bay Denturists, Ogden Point Café

We have been very successful this year with our membership and fundraising drives. With our fundraising and bottle drives we were able to purchase much needed appliances (dishwasher and freezer) for our busy kitchen.

The City of Victoria upgraded our Centre by installing new cushion flooring, painting walls, and a skylight repair was completed.  The Zumba Gold, Scottish Country Dancers and the Old Time Dancers certainly appreciate all the work and upgrades.

We were able to proceed with a colourful mural which was created by Misha Smart, depicting the sprit of New Horizons as well as an area of beautification on the outside pillars at James Bay Community School through a successful grant application to the City of Victoria.

Thanks to Shaw TV and the information they aired about the Seniors Reassurance Program. This created a boost in enrolment to the program from people who saw the segment.  We also received several donations for this program and were able to get a new brochure designed and printed so we can distribute information about the program to the community.

As we approach another new year, we hope to attract new members and in our never ending quest to provide interesting programs for our members, we always appreciate input and/or suggestions to what people would like.

2012 Memberships will be available starting December 5th, 2011; these make excellent Christmas gifts and provide family members and/or friends the opportunities to participate in fitness, socialization and artistic programs all year round.  Wonderful value for $40.00! (11 cents a day)

Our winter Open House will be held on Saturday, January 14 from 10:00 - 1:00 and we hope you will take the opportunity to attend. We will have instructors here to provide information about their classes and programs. There will be demonstrations of some of the services that we provide and again you will have the chance to talk to the practitioners.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday season and we look forward to seeing you in the new year!
