Letter - James Bay Inspires
Feb 2012
James Bay, with its history, land mass and close proximity to downtown, is arguably, Victoria's most favoured municipality.
However, despite that claim, does it really present itself as a unique and memorable entity?
Does a singular, identifiable image, such as the view best seen from the Laurel Point walkway, of the city skyline and the iconic, Johnson Street Bridge (unfortunately, soon to become a sad memory), immediately come to one's mind of that which characterizes James Bay in total?
Or is it the float homes and pleasure boats docked at Fisherman's Wharf?
Also, let's not overlook the superb, big-sky vista off the Holland Point walkway, looking to the amazing cloud effects and the setting sun.
All of that in our desirable, walkable community.
As a major redevelopment we could have, some day (as an important kind of mental imagery), a key, central plaza replacing the Five Corners tangle with beauty and relaxation.
Keep in mind its relationship to an improved Toronto St. (with landscaped, traffic-calming "islets", a more inviting connection to the nearby and ever-popular Beacon Hill Park).
At the other end of James Bay, a more welcoming Ogden Pt. breakwater complete with lights, benches and guardrails (making it truly safe for everybody), would complete the picture of what James Bay has to offer visitors of cruise chips.
Furthermore, it is conceivable that, some day, as we grow, James Bay could have its own business association, adding further vitality to that our residents now offer.
Finally, in order to capture the attention of various governments, we need not be timid in coining a slogan, such as "James Bay Inspires-Dare to Challenge the Future!!
Some might call this "branding". What's wrong with that?
