James Bay New Horizons

By Kim Dixon

We have all heard the saying "Where does the time go?" but really where has the time gone?
So much has been happening. January is always a hub of activity as the Centre starts off a new year. Our Open House was very successful and we are pleased that we are able to offer a variety of new programs and activities. Little did we know that we have such a diversified group and we are pleased that the members have talked to us about what they would like to see happening at the Centre.

In the next few weeks we will be offering classes on using Facebook, Zumba Toning (targeting body sculpting exercises and high energy cardio work) and the much anticipated Introduction to Social Dancing (learn to waltz, jive, rumba). Please call the Centre 250-386-3035 for more information.

We are also partnering with BCAA to offer the Mature Driving course free of charge on March 6 at 1:30 p.m. This workshop will help some of us that have had their driver's license for awhile  assess our driving skills and habits. If you feel it is time to look at your driving, this workshop can help you identify some areas that need fine tuning. Everyone is welcome but we would appreciate you calling to register in advance.

You have heard us talking about what value is a membership to James Bay New Horizons. Here is just an example of how the business community is supporting our members. Did you know that by showing your new 2012 membership at the following locations, you can get a 10% discount - Serious Coffee, Subway and Ogden Point Café and Cup of Joe has provided us with coupons for 25% off a second meal? We want to thank them for their generous support.

By now you may have heard about the financial concerns that Cook St Village Activity Centre has encountered. Unfortunately, this is a great concern for other community and senior centres. We will be watching this situation very closely. We consider our centre to be a community partner, however, as funding becomes harder and harder we may be looking at alternatives to remaining sustainable.

Some of you have heard the buzz about the Ombudsman's second report on The Best of Care: Getting IT Right For Seniors in British Columbia - Part 2. We will be hosting a panel discussion in April to address issues of this report. More information will become available over the next month.

Let's hope that March comes in like a lion and leaves like a lamb, happy Spring!
