Volunteers Helping Seniors
Mar 2012
James Bay Community Project
By Lisa Gleinzer and Kaye Kennish
Have you ever wondered how seniors with mobility issues manage things like: running errands, getting to appointments, and doing the odds and ends that many of us take for granted? In addition to the other community resources meeting these needs, dedicated JBCP volunteers provide a multitude of volunteer services to isolated, low income, and mobility challenged seniors. This month, we are pleased to highlight all the amazing support provided by this group of volunteers.
The James Bay Community Project provides volunteers who can:
- drive you to medical appointments
- help with shopping and errands
- visit you at your home
- be your walking and outing companion
- assist with dog-walking
- handle light gardening/periodic yard-work
- help you with reading, writing and completing forms
- assist you with preparing your annual income tax return
- take care of minor home repairs
- help you through the process of downsizing and de-cluttering, or
- assist in other ways
Please note that these services are dependent on eligibility and volunteer availability.
If you require any of the above services, please contact Lisa Gleinzer, Seniors Outreach Worker, at 250- 388-7844 Ext 310 or at lgleinzer@jbcp.bc.ca.
We are always looking for volunteers to provide the above services, especially for drivers for medical appointments. If you are able to generously provide one hour per week, please contact Catriona Campbell, Coordinator of Volunteers, at 250-388-7844 Ext 308 or at ccampbell@jbcp.bc.ca.
The James Bay Community Project welcomes Capital City Volunteers (CCV) to its new location at 547 Michigan Street. CCV provides the volunteer services listed above to those who strive to maintain their independence within other parts of the City of Victoria. If you require the above services and live in the Victoria area (excluding James Bay) please contact Nansi Blenkiron at 250-388-7844 Ext 318. We are thrilled to have an organization with such an impressive service history under our roof, and to be exploring synergies with them!
