Letter - Can You Identify This Tree?

A new condo is going to be built at 200 Douglas Street. I live next door and am concerned about a great big tree situated between the two properties. The tree is huge and beautiful, a source of shade and privacy. I'm terribly fond of it. Enclosed are two photos of it: I am hoping that Beacon readers might identify what kind of tree it is, and if it is a protected species.
