At 408 Dallas is a lovely old home which, unfortunately for Victoria's heritage stock, is slated for demolition. GT Mann Contracting on behalf of Don Mann Excavating has advised neighbours that the year-long project to replace the home with four new townhouses will begin next month. While I am sorry to see the century old home go, I understand the need to optimize land use, particularly on such a desirable and valuable stretch of Victoria waterfront.
The reason I am contacting you, Mayor Fortin and the Victoria Parks Department, is because the building permit now pushing its way through city channels includes a request to remove a large beautiful and healthy tree from the boulevard in front of the 408 Dallas property (it is not on the lot but rather sits outside of the private property line on city land). According to local seniors who regularly walk along Dallas Road, this tree is the approximate age as the house. Please don't let the proposed removal happen to such a lovely and loved neighbourhood feature. There must be a way for the tree to survive and the development project to proceed. Let's find an alternative. I encourage you to drive by, walk by, bike by, run by, or scooter by 408 Dallas Rd at your earliest opportunity to see what I mean about this magnificent part of Victoria.
Attached is an artist's rendering of the proposed project that pictures the tree as it stands now. I've tied yellow ribbons with "do not cross" signs around the tree to raise awareness in the neighbourhood of the potential removal.
