The Starling

Mar 2012

I'm a Starling me darling -

we go round in flocks

looking dapper in black

and smart polka dots.

We travel in bunches

soon after dawn

sharing breakfast and lunches

while surfing your lawn.

We peck and we poke

to find Leatherjackets -

our favourite grub

in fat juicy packets.

We gorge on blackberries

until we're replete

then dive-bomb your laundry

purpling pillow and sheet.

When our day is over

the sun going down

sees us fly to the country

we don't sleep in town.

Swooping in circles

we crowd into trees

nudging and shoving -

it's often a squeeze.

We murmur all night

swapping roosts now and then

with the sun coming up

we're off once again.
