Letter - What's in a name?
Feb 2013
"What's in a name? That which we call a Rose
By any other name would smell as sweet" (Juliet)
Not quite! For example: Thrifty Foods. Well known, well liked, well run until about twelve years back. Things changed. And things changed again. Three or four years back, Thrifty Foods was sold to Sobeys - a division of the Nova Scotia based company -Empire Company Limited.
More things changed and popular brand named products faded to be replaced by unknown products with titillating names like "Compliments" and "Sensations." The James Bay store turned into an obstacle course. The product pricing system made no sense. Older James Bay residents and wise shoppers shopped elsewhere.
The reason for this comment is simply this. Sobeys is riding on the previous good name of Thrifty Foods. There is no comparison. Sobeys should change the name of Thrifty Foods stores to Sobeys so we all know who to talk to.
Unless the Empire strikes back!
