James Bay Community Project
Amongst the myriad of excellent services offered at the Project are a variety of Community Health and Wellness Programs. Led by talented and skilled volunteers who give their time and expertise each week, groups are open to any age and ability. Since one of our philosophies is accessibility, we don't have a membership fee, and programs are free or low cost, typically anywhere from $2 - $5 dollars. The drop-in fees support our Family and Community Services Programs. Sometimes people think you have to live in James Bay to attend our Health and Wellness Programs, but in fact people come from all over the city to attend.
Art & Craft Studio - A local artist is on hand on Mondays from 10 am - 12 pm to support your artistic and crafting talents in a fun, open-studio environment for any skill level. We have basic supplies available for participants to use thanks to generous community donations.
Blood Pressure Clinic - On the first Wednesday of each month drop in to get your blood pressure checked anytime between 1 - 3 pm. You can also get weighed and measured and pick up some information on healthy blood pressure. This is not just for seniors, so feel free to drop in whatever your age!
Computer Lab Drop In - In partnership with volunteers from Literacy Victoria, we host a mobile computer lab on Mondays from 2:30 - 3:30 pm. Volunteers come with equipment in hand including laptops and a printer. They can teach a variety of computer skills and answer specific questions. This is a free program, first come first served.
Foot Pampering - We offer basic foot pampering by a qualified volunteer. This program is free, but is for low income seniors and adults with disabilities. Foot pampering is by appointment only and times and dates vary.
Hatha Yoga - Relax with this gentle style of yoga on Tuesdays from 4:00 - 5:15 pm led by a Certified Yoga Therapist. We have mats, bolsters and blocks available for use. We recently purchased new equipment with a grant from the Sarah Spencer Foundation.
Nourishing Life, Acupressure Self-Massage - Dao Yin, the ancient form of acupressure self- massage eases pain, improves flexibility and increases energy and fun. This is a great way to end the week on Fridays from 1:00 - 2:30 pm.
Meditation & Self Knowledge - This small group practices a 20 - 30 minute meditation followed by a lecture style class teaching a Vedanta text. The classes form a continuum and are for those who can, as much as possible, come every week on Wednesdays from 7:00 - 8:30 pm.
Reiki Treatments - ½ hour energy based healing treatments are offered which can contribute to physical and emotional well-being. Reiki is led by two practitioners and is by appointment only Tuesdays from 1:30 - 3:30 and Thursdays from 10 am - 12 pm.
Qi Gong - Qi is the vital energy that we all have in our beings. Learn the fundamental building blocks of Qi Gong - breathing, concentration and posture and movement. This program runs Friday mornings from 10:30 to 12 noon.
Tai Chi - Join our very experienced instructor in incorporating Yang style Tai Chi, along with Qi Gong exercises and ShiBuShi meditation exercises for improved health. Start your week off with this class Mondays from 1:00 - 2:00 pm.
Our heartfelt thanks to the 300 volunteers who give so generously of their time and energy to the James Bay Community Project and Capital City Volunteers. For further information about all of our programs and services, please visit our website at .
