Well, wasn’t that a summer to remember? The beautiful weather contributed heavily to a bounteous harvest, which graced the farmers’ tables at James Bay Community Market. Throughout the season, each week we were able to enjoy buying seedlings, then mini cucumbers, then baskets of berries, jumbo red tomatoes, zucchini galore, and the list goes on. As the season comes to a close, the farmers’ tables heave with the fruits of their labours.

While it would hardly be a farmers’ market without the farmers and their fellow vendors, one cannot underestimate the role that you, the consumer, play in sustaining this weekly community event. Many of you have frequented the corner of Menzies and Superior every Saturday since May to fill your bag with local goods, enjoy some fine music, and share general merriment with other members of the James Bay Market community. Rest assured, your faithful presence has been noticed and is deeply appreciated by your hard working market vendors.

Sadly, summer cannot go on forever, and so, the James Bay Community Market will, again, be packing up the tents and saying farewell on October 11. By way of saying thanks to the community, and celebrating the fruits of the season, this final Saturday market will be declared Harvest Day. Of course there will be the annual Pie Contest, open to all fruit pie makers, young and old. Pull out your granny’s favourite fruit pie recipe or produce a brand new creation. Just make sure you bring your pie in a disposable container and have it on the Information Table no later than 10:30am, as judging will occur at 11:00am sharp. Prizes will be offered for 1st and 2nd place. Those who are more inclined to eating rather than baking pies will have the opportunity to buy pie by the slice. If you prefer a more savoury snack, you will find freshly cooked corn on the cob from 11:00am-2:00pm.

The James Bay Community Market is your community market. It wouldn’t happen without you, so be sure to show up on October 11 and help us celebrate our community, our harvest, and the close of another wonderful summer season.
