Iyengar Yoga

Into The Mystery
By Ken Steele
The Iyengar Yoga Centre of Victoria (202 - 919 Fort Street, above the Blue Fox Restaurant ) celebrated its 10th anniversary in the present location on the 10th September. The celebration included two one-hour asana classes for beginners, followed by call and response chanting led by three members of Bhavantu Sound. The afternoon was rounded off by a discussion of yoga philosophy by the 80-year-old founder of the Centre, Shirley Daventry-French, and her husband, Dr. Derek French. Mingling and the consumption of copious amounts of home-baked goods, chai tea, and fresh fruit made for a totally enjoyable time. Participants could attend for all or just one part of the celebration.
The Centre periodically hosts open houses - usually before the beginning of a new term, so that prospective students can have the opportunity of getting a taste of what Iyengar Yoga is all about. There are classes for all levels, including those with special needs. The emphasis on safety and working at your own personal level has always appealed to me. No matter how often it happens, I always find it amazing that I feel significantly better, both physically and emotionally, after a class. Try it; you'll like it!
