"Victoria couldn't be a better place to start an environmentally conscious company," says Andrew Mitchell, a 24 year old 4-time Canadian Downhill Mountain Bike champion and Business Administration graduate of UVic. Mitchell is also the head of a new entrepreneurial venture, GeaZone, which launched at the beginning of the New Year. Building on his long-time passion for biking and his concerns for "what is happening in the world, economically and environmentally", Mitchell has created a sustainable courier service option for local businesses in Victoria.
How does Geazone provide an environmentally friendly alternative to delivery services which release carbon emissions into our communities? By replacing combustion engine vehicles with good, old-fashioned manpower! All GeaZone deliveries are transported via their signature "Eco-Courier" bikes, a unique, three-wheeled design by Mitchell. These bikes also feature an electric assist system, enabling their individual riders to carry heavy loads over long distances.
Not only does GeaZone provide a "green" delivery option, but also helps eliminate the noise and nuisance created by traffic congestion in the city. Guaranteeing delivery within two hours not only in downtown Victoria, but also James Bay and Vic West, the efficient GeaZone team is dedicated to supporting a sustainable community by working with local businesses.
Mitchell is joined in his venture by fellow Downhill Mountain Bikers, Jeff Austin and Joe Esnouf, and Environmental Technology Student Jared Noble. "Here at GeaZone we believe global sustainability has to grow from a natural succession of grassroots movements" says Noble. With any luck, the GeaZone Eco-Couriers will be an important part of just such a movement here in Victoria. When asked about his role in the venture, Austin replied: "It's really about being on the frontlines of going green".
