James Bay Community Project

By Nancy Smith, Family Centre Facilitator

Children and the wonders of summer ... playing barefoot in the grass, exploring tide pools, finding crabs, pouring endless pails of water that disappears like magic on the sand, eating fresh strawberries, pulling up carrots right out of the ground, cracking open a peapod to see what's inside, watching tomatoes ripen on the vine, following the progress of a daddy-long-legs or watching the shimmer of a dragonfly's wing, the dancing flames of a campfire, falling asleep under the stars...

As much as we enjoy and will miss these wonderful days of summer, we are looking forward to the changes the autumn will bring, with energy and optimism. In the words of the Spanish philosopher, George Santayana, "To be interested in the changing seasons is a happier state of mind than to be hopelessly in love with the spring."   In this spirit, we would like to share a few program changes that will be coming to the Family Centre this fall.

Our morning drop-in programs will now finish at 11:15 am instead of 11:30 am.  Why?

As you may already know, James Bay Community Project is a non-profit organization and has provided services to the community for over 30 years.  Looking ahead, one of the ways we hope to continue to offer services to a diverse group of people will be through community partnerships.

One of those partnerships will be with VIHA (the Vancouver Island Health Authority) who will be leasing our Family Centre space several days per week from 11:30 am-3:30 pm for a new program they are starting.  This will bring in much needed funding to JBCP and will allow us to support many other worthwhile programs.

We are pleased to announce that we will be adding a Toddler Time Drop-In on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 am -11:15 am.  Deb Fletcher, who currently runs our popular Mother Goose program, will be facilitating this group and we are so thrilled that she is joining us.

All of our current Family Centre programs will be continuing:

Drop-in Playgroups on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays

Family Dinner Drop-In on Tuesdays from 4-6 p.m.

Parent-Child Mother Goose on Wednesdays.

Baby Group for new moms on Thursdays

Cool Cues, a social skills group, for school-age children on Mondays 3:30-4:45 pm

Please refer to our website, for more information, or to register for any of our programs.

So, Goodbye summer...Hello Fall... crunching leaves, brilliant colours, raining chestnuts, muddy puddles, rubber boots,  pumpkins and apples, busy squirrels, crisp mornings, windy days bringing piles of dancing leaves...
