A festive James Bay tradition
Nov 2012
By Jessica Duncan and Pat McGuire
For over 30 years, James Bay has been home to a December event that is the embodiment of the seasonal spirit - a gathering of craftspeople, performers and artisans, presenting their talents and wares for your pleasure. This year, on December 1st, in the spirit of community, creativity and merriment, the James Bay Market Society once again, brings to you the Dickens Fair, a festive evening winter market.
James Bay's Dickens Fair is a neighbourhood event that has something to offer everyone, no matter how young or how old you are. As one would expect with a December market, you will find a plethora of handcrafted items, edible or otherwise. All vendors are juried to ensure you have access to a quality selection of unique gifts for the ones you love. Pottery, knitting, soaps and cosmetics, jams and preserves and other artisan foods, jewelry, woodwork, clothing and candles are just a few of the handmade, affordable items that will be available at the James Bay Community School Centre (140 Oswego) on December 1st when it is transformed into the festive winter market. You will also find local farmers selling winter produce, locally raised grain-fed beef, eggs, and baked goods along side the craftspeople and artisans. Be sure to bring plenty of re-usable shopping bags to carry your purchases home.
Last year the Fair was held, as usual, on a Saturday, but the hours were changed to make it a later day affair. The new hours were so popular, the Dickens Fair will run between 2pm and 8pm this year. With hot beverages and tasty, nutritious meals available in the café, you may find yourself staying for the duration. Of course, there will be shopping involved, but one is also guaranteed to be entertained by a variety of activities, demonstrations and performances (including music) for all ages. For the entertainment and activity schedule and detailed vendor products, visit , or call (250)381.5323.
So mark your calendar and save your pennies for an afternoon and evening of merriment, entertainment and shopping. Drop in before the truck light parade, or after to warm up! Come alone, meet a friend or bring the family to enjoy the festive spirit in the heart of James Bay.
Admission by donation to the James Bay Market Society.
